Diagnostic Ultrasound

Ultrasound is sound waves with a frequency over 20,000 cycles per second. Because of its high, inaudible frequency, ultrasound has a number of medical applications.

By using ultrasound techniques, it is possible to distinguish between different types of tissue in the body, measure the organs, and detect movement. The high-pitched sound waves are focused into a thin beam and passed into the body. When ultrasound encounters bone or air in the body, most of it is reflected, while various tissues absorb the sound to different degrees. When the ultrasound is used for diagnosis, the echo is converted into a visual image, which is interpreted by a specialist.

The Ultrasound examinations provided by Greig Associates include abdominal, obstetrical, pelvic, breast, and small parts.  Breast biopsies using ultrasound are also performed.  These services are only available at our Victoria Drive location and require both a referral from your doctor and an appointment.  Follow the above link for booking information.
