BMD General Information
Bone Mineral Density (BMD) is a test that measures the amount of calcium in a special region of the bones. Using this information, radiologists can estimate the strength of the bones.
As a person grows older, their bones naturally become thinner (called osteopenia). Over time, the bones lose minerals (like calcium), mass, and structure, making them weaker. If undetected and untreated, this can lead to osteoporosis and bone fracture.
Traditional X-ray’s cannot detect mild bone loss. However, Dual Energy Absorptiometry (DEXA) uses two different X-ray beams that produce the most accurate test for measuring BMD.
DEXA measures one’s BMD by scanning the bones of the spine and hip. These areas have the greatest amount of bone loss and have the greatest risk of fracture. Under good conditions, DEXA can measure as little as two percent of bone loss per year.
